How does the oral theory exam work?
The questions in the oral exam are exactly the same as in the regular theory exam. Only the method of examination is adapted for people who need extra support. From experience, we also know that most candidates receive a few hints as a gift from the staff member. So you’re allowed to make more mistakes!
What Exactly is the Oral Exam?
The oral theory exam is an adapted way of taking the CBR exam, intended for people who don’t function well in a regular exam hall. During the exam, you sit alone in a separate room with a CBR staff member. This person clearly reads each question and the possible answers to you, so you can fully focus on the content. You answer the questions yourself on a computer and determine when to proceed to the next question. So there’s no time pressure.
The oral exam takes 45 minutes in total, which is 15 minutes longer than a standard theory exam. This extra time provides a more relaxed pace, which is especially important if you get nervous easily or have difficulty with reading and concentration.
Who is this Type of Exam for?
The individual theory exam is for anyone who needs support to perform well. This includes candidates with test anxiety, dyslexia, ADHD, autism, or other learning or behavioral disorders. But also people who don’t have a good command of the Dutch language or simply don’t function well in a crowded room benefit from the oral theory exam.
Additionally, the oral theory exam is ideal for people who have previously failed the exam, even if they had extra time then. Often it’s not about knowledge, but about the method of examination. In a quiet room, without distractions, with personal guidance and without the pressure of others around you, many people suddenly perform much better and we see the pass rate increase significantly.
How does it work at CBR?
On the day of your oral exam, you report to CBR. There, you’ll be personally received by an examiner who will guide you through the entire process. You then take a seat in a separate room. The examiner/staff member reads the questions aloud, shows them on screen, and ensures everything is clear regarding the setup. You won’t receive content explanations about the material, but if you don’t understand something in the phrasing, for example if a word or sentence is difficult, you may ask for clarification. We often notice that they sometimes do give hints. If you are hearing impaired or deaf, it’s possible to take the oral exam at CBR with a sign language interpreter. You must arrange this yourself, 14 days in advance through an official website: globaltalk.nl. privecursus.nl can help you with this as well. In certain cases, the costs of this interpreter may even be reimbursed through the UWV.
Difference from the Theory Exam with Extra Time
Many people think the exam with extra time is the same as the oral exam. This is not the case. With the theory exam with extra time, you still sit in the exam hall with other candidates, but you get 15 minutes more time. The questions are not explained by a staff member, and you don’t receive extra guidance.
The oral theory exam clearly offers more support: a comfortable environment, guidance from a staff member, and the possibility to have questions explained orally.
